MADARA is a Japanese calligrapher whose work bridges centuries of tradition with a deeply personal contemporary vision. Rooted in the discipline of Japanese calligraphy, his practice transforms written characters into powerful visual expressions of strength, serenity, hope, and human connection.
Introduction To Hisseki-jutsu
For years, MADARA devoted himself to studying Hisseki-jutsu, a philosophy of calligraphy rooted in the belief that every brushstroke carries intention, emotion, prayer, and hope. Rather than simply writing words, the practice seeks to express an invisible energy that connects people through art. Over nearly two decades, he created more than 800,000 personalized calligraphy works, most notably naming artworks for newborn children. Each piece became both a celebration of new life and a heartfelt wish for the child’s future.
Like many people from Fukushima, MADARA’s life was profoundly changed by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the nuclear disaster that followed. Forced to leave behind both his home and the business he had built, he faced the challenge of starting over. With the support of family and friends, he gradually rebuilt his life, an experience that would forever shape both his outlook and his artistic practice.
The Birth of Contemporary Calligraphy Art
From this period of renewal emerged a new creative language. Inspired by the resilience he discovered through rebuilding, MADARA developed what he calls Contemporary Calligraphy Art. Combining expressive brushwork with vibrant colour, layered textures, and carefully balanced negative space, his work expands the possibilities of traditional calligraphy while remaining deeply connected to its foundations. Each composition is created with the hope of offering encouragement, compassion, and a sense of connection to those who encounter it.

Sharing His Vision with the World
An important turning point in MADARA’s career came when he joined Singulart.
“Since joining Singulart, I have been invited to perform calligraphy and lead workshops at international events attended by entrepreneurs and business leaders from around the world. I have also received commissions from international organizations and foundations, and I am currently creating large-scale works for museum-related projects.“
