Cécile Duchêne-Malissin is an installation artist based in Strasbourg.
Art as evidence
Having always felt the desire to draw, from early on, this artist knew that she wanted to make her passion into an artform and was driven towards a literary degree with history of art and the art of plastics. Thus, she joined the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Olivier de Serres in Paris and then the Faculty of Arts in Strasbourg in the multi-medium section and started exhibiting her work in 2000.
Cécile Duchêne’s work has evolved over the years. Wishing to distance herself from “simple painting” this artist uses that purely as a starting point in her installation art works and undertakes a real labour with varying materials. Thus, she fluctuates between marouflage, collage and sewing as well reverting to ink, oil pastels or graphite pencils.
Between reality and fiction
Cécile Duchêne’s output seems to waltz between fiction and reality. Often placing a human, or sometimes an animal at the centre of her work, her creations are an invitation to meditate and express melancholy, abandonment, loneliness and, sometimes, hope.
