David Chalmers Alesworth - photographer, draftsman, textile artist

David Chalmers Alesworth is a dual-national artist who divides his time between Bristol, UK and Pakistan. He produces work in a variety of media, including textiles, drawing and painting, which are influenced by his time in Pakistan. Alesworth examines the idea of the garden as an archival formation across cultures.

Cultural connections

Alesworth studied for a BFA from Wimbledon College of Art, London, and an MFA from Transart Institute, Berlin. He moved to Pakistan in 1989, collaborating with Pakistani artists in the group ‘Karachi Pop’ in the 1990s. Alesworth’s work is influenced by his position as a British artist with Pakistani nationality; he is interested in cross-cultural communication and the impact of colonialism.

Garden as metaphor

Alesworth uses the garden as a metaphor with which to examine humanity’s culturally specific relationships with nature. He works with a variety of media, creating drawings, sculptures, and textile works. Alesworth’s textile interventions involve iconic Western landscapes portrayed on antique carpets, but the intention is not to obscure the original design. Instead Alesworth creates a cross-cultural dialogue; he views the landscapes as rooted and growing from the textile beneath.

International acclaim

Alesworth has exhibited extensively for decades across the world: in the UK, Pakistan, Australia and Japan to name a few. He has exhibited at the Asian Art Triennial and the Berlin Biennale. Alesworth features in numerous public collections: the Agha Khan Museum, Canada; Queensland Art Gallery, Australia; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; and the AMA Foundation, Chile.
