Marittie De Villiers,
born in 1966, is a South African artist presently based in Strand, South
Africa. After earning a BA in communications from Potcehfstroom
University, she travelled across America for an extended period of time which
inspired her work, which now largely focuses on portraiture.
Inspired by her
Through her travels,
Villiers explored and had a closer insight into alternative lifestyles and
cultures which now inform much of her work. Coming across a mass of interesting
images and people across the world, she uses these as muses in her art. Studying
the faces of many different people and expressing different types of emotion
fascinates Villiers and continues to inspire her work.
Villers allows the
individual in focus to dictate her technique and adapts her style accordingly.
She does not follow a specific process, allowing her to be fully spontaneous
and creative. In general, she decides on a particular image to concentrate on
based from her photographs, sketches or visual imagery. She is then led by her
emotions and intuition to paint her canvas.

further develop her international reputation in the future.
