Pavel Wolberg

Pavel Wolberg - photographer
"It is important to me that my images reflect a trace of visual reality that is not only nostalgic in my memory."

Pavel Wolberg is an award-winning photographic artist and former photojournalist. His work blurs the boundaries of photography, evoking the organic drama of photojournalism, whilst moving away from traditions of news photography, instead exploring an artistic sensibility towards his subjects.

Conflict at home

Born in the former Soviet Union, Pavel Wolberg immigrated to Israel when he was 7 years old. Inherent to his personal identity, the Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Palestinian wars feature heavily in Pavel’s work, recording the tensions and conflicts of his home countries.

Simple yet disturbing

Touched by the political, social and religious conflicts of present day society, Pavel records snapshots and glimpses into the lives of real people often in disordered spaces of conflict. There is a certain simplicity to his work, that is at the same time disturbing, yet allows us to approach the reality of these human relationships.

Wartime nostalgia

Pavel Wolberg’s work has been compared to the black-and-white wartime photographs of the likes of Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Israel Prize laureate, Micha Bar-Am. His photographs have been exhibited around the world, notably at The Hague, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Venice Biennale, and La Maison Rouge, Paris.
