About this artwork
This original mixed media work by Ben Goymour explores the contrast between Marilyn Monroe, the public icon, and Norma Jeane, the woman behind the image.
Within the same composition, Ben presents two contrasting identities. Marilyn is bold, colourful and instantly recognisable, while Norma Jeane appears quieter and more vulnerable.
The relationship between the two becomes the focus of the piece, opening up ideas around fame, identity, fragility… and the construction of a public persona.
The surface is built through layers of paint, handwritten references, drips, scratches and expressive marks. Rather than presenting a polished celebrity portrait, the work allows both image and process to remain visible.
The hand painted frame forms part of the composition, carrying colour and marks beyond the central image and making the work a single complete piece.
Original: One off piece
Medium: Mixed media on panel and hand-painted frame
Dimensions: 47" x 47"

« Art is the best therapy. You can lose yourself for years. If more people painted, the world would be a better place. »
Ben Goymour is a British contemporary artist. A former Army Commando who served with 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, he came to painting later in life and is entirely self taught. What began as a personal outlet after military service developed into a full time artistic practice in 2021.
His work first centred on landscape, but has evolved into expressive portraiture and figurative painting that explores identity, character and the space between what we see and what we think we understand. Working across original paintings, mixed media and works on paper, Goymour creates pieces with a strong emotional presence, layered surfaces and a bold, instinctive use of colour.
His work has been exhibited through galleries across the UK and is held in private collections in Britain and internationally. Recent works bring together portraiture, cultural figures and personal narratives, while retaining visible marks, texture and evidence of the making process.
