About this artwork
This painting explores the dialogue between realistic gesture and abstract space through the image of two hands reaching toward an undefined field of geometric colour.
Rather than depicting a specific narrative, the composition invites multiple interpretations. The hands become a universal language of communication, searching, hesitation and connection, while the surrounding abstract structure suggests fragments of memory, architecture, digital… space or emotional landscape.
Created entirely in oil pastel through a layered process that combines controlled realism with spontaneous abstraction, the work emphasizes the tension between precision and freedom. The textured surface allows each mark to remain visible, reinforcing the physical presence of the medium.
This artwork is the first piece in the series Composition of Hands and Abstraction, which investigates the expressive potential of human gestures within abstract environments

Boaz Gabai is a painter and digital artist with roots in both classical and contemporary practices, trained at Bezalel Academy and further refined through academic studies in Tel Aviv. His work fuses painterly, handcrafted digital painting and traditional oil pastel, employing a unique interplay between abstraction and realism, spontaneity and obsessive detail. Through landscapes, portraits, and cartographies, he explores the tensions between nature and the human-made, conveying a multi-layered sense of wonder, psychological depth, and the poignant transience of human experience.
