In “Caminhos de Escrita” ("Paths of Writing") , a pictorial narrative centred on Luísa, a
fictional character who, at various stages of her life, encounters different authors through reading their books: Carlo Collodi, Emily Brontë, Charles Baudelaire, Mariano José de Larra, Heinrich von Kleist and Eça de Queirós.
The settings and events depicted in the paintings are historically accurate, the result of research into the authors’ biographies. In… this painting Luísa reads “Die Marquise von O” by Heinrich von Kleist.
Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811) was born in Frankfurt an der Oder.
He met Goethe and Schiller whilst staying at the home of the poet Wieland, and fell in love with Wieland’s daughter, Luise.
Here Luisa appears at the window with her book, observing the scene. In this character, I used collage to mark the temporal space between herself, who lived in the 20th century, and the setting that portrays an episode from Kleist's life in the 19th century, described above.
