About this artwork
The starting point for this project is an imaginary female character, Luisa Ventura, whose life spans almost the entire 20th century (1901–1993) and who finds in literature the passion that will accompany her throughout her life. Literature will thus be the vehicle that allows her to ‘visit’ the lives and environments of six nineteenth-century writers in six European countries.
This work is based on rigorous research into the authors’ lives, and… all the places and dates mentioned are real.
Here, Luisa, already a woman, reads "Les Fleurs du Mal" by Charles Baudelaire and visits the room where the poet lived with Jeanne Duval (in the painting), his muse and lover.
The use of collage in Luísa marks two temporal spaces: that of the environment in which Baudellaire lived in the 19th century and the 20th-century women who at that moment is reading "Les Fleurs du Mal".
