In the series "Caminhos de Escrita" ("Paths of Writing") , of which this painting is a part, a pictorial narrative centred on Luísa, a fictional character who, at various stages of her life, encounters different authors through reading their books: Carlo Collodi, Emily Brontë, Charles Baudelaire, Mariano José de Larra, Heinrich von Kleist and Eça de Queirós.
The settings and events depicted in the paintings are historically accurate, the result… of research into the authors’ biographies, with all the places and dates mentioned being real.
Here, Luísa reads “Pinocchio” by Carlo Collodi in a square in Florence where the author was born.
The girl seen in the painting is Luisa in her childhood, and it is a collage painted, cut out, and glued to canvas.
The use of collage in the "protagonist" marks two temporal spaces: that of the environment in which Collodi lived in the 19th century and the 20th-century girl who at that moment is reading Pinocchio.
