About this artwork
In the series "Caminhos de Escrita"("Paths of Writing") , of which this painting is a part, a pictorial narrative centred on Luísa, a fictional character who, at various stages of her life, encounters different authors through reading their books: Carlo Collodi, Emily Brontë, Charles Baudelaire, Mariano José de Larra, Heinrich von Kleist and Eça de Queirós.
The settings and events depicted in the paintings are historically accurate, the result of… research into the authors’ biographies, with all the places and dates mentioned being real.
Luisa, now a teenager, reads “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë that throughout her life, rarely left the isolation of the moors. It was in this setting that the literary genius of Charlotte and Emily flourished.
I used collage on the girl, thus marking the two time periods present in the painting: the moor where Emily lived, in the 19th century and the girl reading, in the 20th century.
