Along the coasts of this sea passed the Silk Road, the routes of salt and spices, oils and perfumes, amber and ornaments, tools and weapons, wisdom and knowledge, art and science. The Hellenic emporia were at the same time markets and embassies.… Power and civilization spread along the Roman roads. Prophets and religions came from the Asian territory. Europe was conceived on the Mediterranean.
