Period silver print (158 x 97 mm) laminated on cardboard (318 x 250 mm) with triple drawn lines. Signed and dated "F Léger A. 23-4+16".
Some folds, silver mirrors.
At the Normandy front in Argonne, Léger created 6 works, including 4 on makeshift materials (wooden trunks and planks). Comic vision of the life of the soldier on the front line, The proof that man is descended from the ape is one… of the only two known paintings that Léger created in 1915, which he offered to his friend Captain Blanc. To preserve a trace of these two works, Léger executed several reproductions in 1916.
With a metal tip, Léger scratched certain elements of the black and white photograph (notably the trumpet at the top left), to render the relief present in the canvas.
