About this artwork
"Jacaranda Season" is a visual poem of Spring. An atmospheric blur wraps the seated figure in a dreamlike haze of lavender, violet, and green to evoke the brief, spectacular bloom of Jacaranda trees in Southern California. Originally native to South America, the Jacaranda mimosifolia was first popularized in Los Angeles in the early 20th century by horticulturist Kate Sessions. Though she began planting them in San Diego, they quickly spread north… - spectacular blooms multiplying alongside the mid-century population boom of Los Angeles. Over the decades, the distinct purple-blue of these blossoms has become synonymous with the mythos and allure of Southern California — a history and feeling I sought to capture in this piece in which clouds of purple mimic the canopy of blooming jacaranda trees, transforming a direct life study into an evocative, psychological landscape. Jacaranda Season blends careful observation with painterly emotion.
