About this artwork
Perched on the crestline of the Santa Monica Mountains, Mulholland Drive marks the physical and psychological spine of Los Angeles, dividing the urban basin from the suburban valleys. In my oil on linen painting “Mulholland Drive Overlook” a figure rests atop a Harley Davidson motorcycle at a ridgeline overlook. The glittering city grid of Los Angeles stretches out in the background - a nebulous, shimmering field of yellow, white, and pale blue lights… that mimic the atmospheric inversion layers of the basin. Above this urban landscape, the sky is split into dramatic, horizontal bands of deep indigo, dark pink, and soft violet, capturing the unique, post-sunset twilight of Southern California. In my painting, fragile traces of underpaint, or pentimenti, appear like ghosts of previous ideas rising through the asphalt and suggests that the rider is suspended between the physical reality of the motorcycle and the psychological weight of the city's collective past.
