About this artwork

Kerry gleans her images from a number of pop culture sources. This image was taken as a film still from an underwater model shoot, and Kerry was attracted to the quietness and poise of the woman, with her hair sweeping in the current of water in front of her. This movement of water in the painting gives the impression that the woman stands quietly firm against the current - perhaps relating it to our personal beliefs which might stand against traditional… or popular norms. For Kerry it is a reminder to continue to quietly stand against old fashioned beliefs stemmed in a patriarchal society.
Use of contrasted colours such as orange and blue guides the eye, whilst the figure remains quite abstracted, leaving the shapes to be put together by the viewer. Kerry has developed her style using contemporary art techniques such as expressionism and pop art. The resultant painting is a wonderful reflection of poise and feminine strength.
Named after a line in Audre Lorde's poem "A Woman Speaks".

Kerry A. Inkster is a painter and photographer based in Australia whose works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions nationally. Through the use of harmonious colors and the "aesthetics of chance", she fuses expressionist backgrounds with pop art foregrounds.
Inkster explores themes relating to beautiful and strong women who defy convention. Her distinctive figurative pieces often depict women being cocooned by water, as well as emerging from it.
