Margaret Ashman was born in 1959 in Northampton, England. She became a scientist post university – obtaining a degree in Physics from Oxford University and working for several years as a research Physicist at the Hirst Research Centre GEC. She also holds a Fine Art Degree from the University of Hertfordshire and a Masters in Printmaking from the University of Brighton.
Themes of focus
Ashman has developed clear themes within her practice based on the use of photography. Ashman's exploration of sign language, have led to work in which she addresses subjects comprising of religious faith, spirituality and emotion. Hands are a recurring theme in her images, whether re-affirming positive qualities of human nature or as a means of expression.
