About this artwork
The weather on the Northern coastline of Ireland has a unique quality that can change from calm serenity to a dramatic storm, and back again, in the course of what seems like mere minutes. At any moment, you are never sure if you are on the brink of a violent tempest, or if the weather is about to break. I tried to capture that uneasy feeling in this painting, and indeed, while I was completing the plein air study for this work, exactly such changes…
in weather occurred. This is one of a series of paintings that started as studies done en plein air in and around County Mayo Ireland in 2024. I took the plein air works back home to Canada and completed the larger paintings on stretched linen in my studio. This is a scene from the townland of Knockaun, famous for its dramatic Northern coastline bordering the Atlantic.
