About this artwork
Sometimes I'll just be walking down the street and a view will suddenly strike me as particularly interesting. I liked this composition of city infrastructure, construction cranes, electrical cables, hydro poles, and architectural details with the spectacular backdrop of "The Lions", the two iconic peaks that crown typical mountain views in the city of Vancouver. The lone crow in the composition was happy surprise - I didn't notice it when taking… the original photograph, but was delighted to discover it when I brought the photo into my studio, and to include it in my final composition for the painting.
Michael Shumiatcher works primarily in oils, sculpture, video, and sound, drawing on decades of practice and training under influential mentors and institutions. His style weaves together the immediacy of American Realism, the urban grit of the Ashcan School, and the formal restraint of Minimalism, balancing simplified forms with detailed depictions of fleeting moments. Through his art, he evokes a deep sense of contemplation, inviting viewers to reflect on the richness and complexity of everyday existence.
