I walk, I collect different plants. I see them in the parks and by the roads. I need to know them. I pick them, I dry them and find the paper to put them on. Sometimes it is a blank paper, sometimes I use the drawings of my son. I love his handwriting, his fearless shapes and colours. His energy.
And I start filling it with my embroidery, I choose colour and fill the space. Kind of horror vacui. I sew and sew and sew. I enjoy the sound of the sewing… machine. It feels like work, time is passing and the sound keeps on going.
I change colours and continue. Sometimes a mistake occurs. I use it as a part of the embroidery. Sometimes I do mistakes on purpose, I need them there to fill in the space...empty space to create a colourful story around the plant.
Collecting the plants is for me telling their story, where I found them. It is a confirmation of their existence. What happens when they disappear?
Mira Podmanická is a sculptor and visual artist with a rich academic background, working primarily with sculpture, installation, and textiles. She masterfully blends architecture and textile motifs, applying layered techniques and inventive machine embroidery to create site-specific installations and delicate botanical artworks. Her art delves into memory, presence, and absence, evoking a sense of wonder at the everyday and inviting a deeply haptic, contemplative experience for her viewers.
