About this artwork
This series of worm paintings is inspired by “Sink” by Alyssa Harms-Wiebe, a poem reflecting on human footprints and our disconnection from the earth. Its refrain — “your footprint carries a weight” — informs these works.
Each piece begins with painted footprints and symbolic marks made from acrylic mixed with commercially available pesticides, fertilizers, and fungicides. Once dry, compost earthworms — gently rinsed and placed in diluted non-toxic… food coloring and earth pigments — are introduced to the surface. As they move, they leave visible traces of their paths, often avoiding the chemically treated areas.
The worms are unharmed and returned to compost. The process is video documented.
The resulting works appear abstract, yet function as ecological records of imprint and response.
