About this artwork
"Who Knows What the Hoopoe Said?" is one of the major paintings from my solo exhibition of the same title, held in 2012 at 4 Walls Gallery in Dubai, UAE. Each painting in the exhibit was accompanied by a poem written by the New Yorker poet Reine Emiesh. About this particular painting, she said:
“The Hoopoe told her many secrets, all of his lover’s secrets hidden beneath. So, before it ruins the life you have made, release those dark secrets, and… the memories will fade. The struggle will be over…and you’ll finally be home…with him.”
On the front inside cover of the exhibition catalogue, Nomi Morris, an international journalist, wrote:
“Here, in these paintings, al-Sindy shows figures that suffer under the weight of accumulated secrets—some revealed, but most still shrouded in mystery. The Hoopoe is the messenger who will come to your side to share the news—whether good or bad or to whisper subtle signs and clues, not expecting complete understanding.”
