About this artwork
The Journey presents a scene populated by three figures that seem to exist somewhere between presence and disappearance. A female figure occupies the foreground with a restrained gaze, while two almost theatrical characters emerge behind her, constructed through hats, masks and barely defined gestures.
The painting develops through layers of material, erasure and gestural marks, leaving visible traces of the process. The figures never fully close… or become completely defined: they emerge from the background while simultaneously seeming to dissolve back into it. Fragmented brushwork, contrasts between light and dark areas, and subtle touches of red and yellow create a tension between recognition and ambiguity.
Rather than depicting a specific narrative, the work proposes an open image concerned with identity, memory and transition. The characters appear suspended in a moment of passage, suggesting that the journey is not simply a physical movement, but also a process of transformation

Roberto Gutiérrez Currás (1974, Seville, Spain) is a painter based in Marbella, represented by Galería Nítido.
She has held solo exhibitions in Spain and Mexico, including at the Ralli Museum (Marbella) and the Museum of Anthropology in Xalapa (Mexico). Her work has been presented internationally in New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Mexico City.
He has been a finalist in various painting awards, including the Juan Francés National Prize (2025) and the Almuzara Prize (2022).
