Everything in Murakami's primary market flows through his studio, Kaikai Kiki, which makes provenance unusually clear across media. His original paintings and sculptures are produced and sold through Kaikai Kiki and its galleries such as Perrotin and Gagosian, so studio and gallery documentation, alongside condition, underpins any unique purchase. His editions are the accessible tier: the majority are offset lithographs in runs of 300, hand-signed and numbered lower right, often finished with cold or hot foil, silver and high-gloss UV varnish that are integral to the work. Because the images are widely reproduced, provenance authenticates them: genuine examples arrive from official channels with a certificate and hologram, and in Kaikai Kiki's distinctive multi-layer packaging with a Japanese-language invoice that itself evidences origin. Two impressions of one image can differ sharply in value by finish, edition and condition.
