About this artwork
structure and gesture
Tension fields direct
tell their stories in layers
This work on paper combines an open, resonant color atmosphere with a concentrated, structure-creating gesture. Although the composition consists of spontaneous, sometimes quite raw interventions, it appears remarkably stable. The black brushstrokes do not form a rigid framework, but rather a field of tension that constantly redirects the viewer's gaze. Yellow here is not… merely a color, but appears as a light source. It does not glow decoratively, but rather carries the entire pictorial space. The black forms seem to inscribe themselves within it, rather than simply lying upon it. The background lends the image depth and history. It creates the impression that older layers are shining through, as if the image possesses a memory. Despite the many energetic gestures, the representation never becomes overloaded. There is always enough space for the eye to repeatedly find respite.

« When I'm in the process, I do not think. I let the process guide me. »
The German artist Uwe Beyer, born in 1959, lives in Coswig, near Dresden, and in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle (1988–1993). Uwe Beyer's paintings emerge more from mindfulness than from control. The material is allowed to move, resist, and settle. Form is not imposed but develops organically—stabilizing briefly before dissolving back into openness. Each work exists in a tension between presence and withdrawal, density and emptiness. It exists as a self-contained object while simultaneously eluding complete visibility. Instead of composing images, his practice creates the conditions for their emergence. These paintings do not represent the world.
They reveal the conditions under which form – and thus reality – comes into being. What remains is not an image, but a trace of becoming.
