About this artwork
These abstract paintings are created with oil paint on stretched silk. Many layers of paint are poured. In between pours, the imagery is edited using brushes and sandpaper. The painting surfaces physically change from one side of the painting to the other. As the viewer studies the paintings, smaller landscapes/moments unfold within the larger painting. The process of the painting involves a journey where "chance" is the main ingredient. Virginia…
is responding to the painting process created through the interaction of materials until the painting reaches its' final destination.

« The alchemical and performative processes of painting are the foundation of my creative practice. »
Virginia Bradley is a distinguished American artist who has received numerous prestigious painting fellowships including from the McKnight Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board and Arts Midwest NEA. She employs transparent film and silk as a foundation for her works and their correlating theme of water, before using a diverse range of materials to compose paintings that question the history, origin, meaning and authenticity of the image itself. Through vivid colours and a close engagement with her chosen materials, Bradley ultimately seeks to offer alternative perceptions to certainty.
