About this artwork
African American doctors, Perry Little, H.H. Creft, and George Simkins, forced the City of High Point to review its long-standing policy of racially-segregated recreational facilities by playing golf at the Blair Park municipal course in December 1954. Noted as being the first planned protest against segregation in High Point, the doctors’ play at Blair Park was one of several challenges to segregated municipal golf courses taking place in North… Carolina and across the South in the 1950s. These protests maintained pressure on local governments to desegregate public facilities, and the subsequent legal cases had begun to gain a foothold in the court system starting with Brown v. Board several months earlier. Though the Blair Park protest also served as a catalyst for others to challenge accepted practices in High Point, the doctors’ actions often are overshadowed by the 1960 lunch counter sit-ins. This work is on canvas board.
My roots in African American and Puerto Rican heritage infuse my vibrant styles with vibrant cultural storytelling. My work weaves together contemporary abstraction, urban folk narrative, and Afro-Caribbean symbolism. My working class parents were both creative people, he was an aspiring screenwriter, she was an aspiring fashion designer, they raised me in East Harlem NYC. I was a shy, introverted child with a lot of imagination. By my early twenties I worked my way through fashion and art school. Painting since I was 15, 40 years later I'm finally comfortable in my creativity and have devoted myself to exploring subjects and topics of interest to me. I'm neurodivergent so my styles vary, greatly. What brings me joy is knowing that I am contributing beauty and a piece of my heritage to those sophisticated enough to appreciate it. I have 3 cats, I also write novels and I'm working on an art book of my work to debut next year. My official studio site is : www.greenview-art-studio.com
