About this artwork
“Maria Melón” is a vibrant, stylized portrait blending femininity, nourishment, and identity. A faceless woman balances a crown of melons and fruit, her body echoing abundance and quiet strength. Rich greens and soft textures create a lush, immersive atmosphere, while the watermelon motif suggests sweetness, resilience, and cultural memory.
A quiet, luminous figure stands at the center of a lush green world, surrounded by the weight and abundance… of fruit.
Maria Melón presents an Afro-Caribbean market woman whose presence is both grounded and symbolic—part vendor, part vessel of nourishment, part living harvest. Balancing a bowl of fruit upon her head and holding a watermelon at her center, Maria becomes a visual echo of fertility, labor, and sustenance. The rounded form of the fruit creates a subtle illusion—suggesting both the body and the land, the personal and the collective. She is not simply selling fruit; she embodies the cycle of growth, care, and provision.
My roots in African American and Puerto Rican heritage infuse my vibrant styles with vibrant cultural storytelling. My work weaves together contemporary abstraction, urban folk narrative, and Afro-Caribbean symbolism. My working class parents were both creative people, he was an aspiring screenwriter, she was an aspiring fashion designer, they raised me in East Harlem NYC. I was a shy, introverted child with a lot of imagination. By my early twenties I worked my way through fashion and art school. Painting since I was 15, 40 years later I'm finally comfortable in my creativity and have devoted myself to exploring subjects and topics of interest to me. I'm neurodivergent so my styles vary, greatly. What brings me joy is knowing that I am contributing beauty and a piece of my heritage to those sophisticated enough to appreciate it. I have 3 cats, I also write novels and I'm working on an art book of my work to debut next year. My official studio site is : www.greenview-art-studio.com
