« being with myself with nobody around is the most creative state i can have far from anybody and everything is my inspiration »

Alona Harpaz, born in 1971, is an Israeli visual artist. She has completed studies in both Israel and the United States and is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany.

A Balancing Act

The overriding theme of Harpaz’s work is exploring the often impossible situations that we face as humans. In many ways her work is about finding that balance and harmony between opposing forces. In the same instant, Harpaz’s paintings are emboldening yet also aware of their own limitations. She tries not to take her art too seriously and to always locate the humour within it, which she achieves with her vibrant use of colour.

Colours and Textures

The bold aesthetic and industrial, artificial colours of Harpaz’s large-scale canvases are carried out largely in acrylic. The paint is applied with the focus on building texture and materiality on the surface and in engaging the viewer with both the painterly nature of the canvas and the subject matter.

International Acclaim

Harpaz has been exhibiting extensively abroad since the 1990s in cities such as Berlin, Tel Aviv, New York and London. Her work belongs to numerous prestigious private and public collections such as the Israel Museum Collection, the Anita & Poju Zabludowicz Collection and the Richard Prince Collection. In 2013, Harpaz founded Circle1 - an arts platform for Israeli and international art.
