Amy Olds is an American contemporary painter who has been living and working in the UK since 1988. She studied for a BA in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a Master’s in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University. She creates abstract paintings inspired by landscape and the physical process of painting.
Olds has always been inspired by the landscape, and she aims to capture emotions and sensations through the use of colour, space and motion: with a focus on the physicality of painting. She combines quick, accidental splashes with slower, more considered brushwork to communicate a sense of push and pull in the work, and to give it a certain dynamism.
Olds begins by pouring paint directly onto the canvas, allowing it to pool and disperse. Once she is happy with the piece at this spontaneous, accidental stage, she then takes a more considered approach, examining colour relationships and the balance of the composition. This two-phase process creates a painting that is both energetic and calm, dynamic and peaceful.
Olds has exhibited her work across the UK in both solo and group exhibitions, and at art fairs including Affordable Art Fairs in Hampstead and Battersea. She has also shown her work at the Brick Lane Gallery in London, and the Marzia Frozen Gallery in Berlin, Germany. Her work features in numerous private collections and the Paintings in Hospitals Collection.
