Grigori Dor, born in 1970, is a Russian artist who is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany. He is completely reimagining the still life tradition with his collage-esque paintings of floral and object arrangements.
Beauty vs Disorder
Dor’s work exists between opposing forces; presence and absence, reality and illusion, and chaos and order. The images appear decadent and beautiful but on closer inspection, present a more sinister and desolate outlook. The abundant imagery in Dor’s paintings are representative of an individual's yearnings and dreams yet also provide a metaphor for the excess and greed of society.
Dor is hugely interested by the decadence and realistic style of the Baroque still life and perpetuates this preoccupation with surface and bodily decay through the overwhelming mix of illusionistic textures and imagery. He arranges petals of flowers with fragments of glossy magazine and found objects in order to create the sensory and often sinister imagery.
Art Fairs and Exhibitions
Dor has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in galleries and art institutions across Germany. His work has been presented at a number of important, international art fairs such as Scope Basel in Basel, SLICK art fair in Paris and Positions art fair in Berlin.
