Lakshmi Mohanbabu is a Singaporean artist, born in Kabul, Afghanistan. She trained as an architect at Manipal Institute of Technology, India and then as a fashion designer at The National Institute of Fashion Technology. Both of these academic ventures inspire and guide her work, which focuses on portraiture.
A Focus on Contemporary Social Issues
Much of Mohanbabu’s subject matter focuses on emotional responses, individualism and other societal issues. Her “Expressions” series, inspired by Chinese opera and Greek tragicomedy, arose from witnessing Singapore’s emergence as an independent state, along with the plethora of emotions such as: joy, sadness, agony and excitement shared by the Singaporean people through this period. Alternatively, her “Colours of unity” series is a commentary on issues of race and discrimination as depicted through the colourful skin and reflective glasses of her subjects.
