About this artwork
The composition of the work Clear Light – Empty Space II focuses on the play of light and shadow in an empty space. The room is decorated in dark, almost black blue and green tones. This color scheme could convey an atmosphere of loneliness, melancholy, if it were not for the strong contrast between light and dark, which draws the viewer's attention to a window through which light comes in, illuminating the room and connecting it with the outside… world.
The picture invites the viewer to use the empty space as a place of peace and reflection in the area of tension between opening to the outside world and the need for retreat in order to reflect on what is essential to them.
The geometric rigor of the composition contrasts with Peter Knauer's expressive and experimental painterly technique, which emphasizes the materiality and spontaneity of the medium through visible brushstrokes and the texture of the surface.
« I owe the fact that I became a painter to my passion for aesthetics, the search for harmony in form and color, and my love for precision. »
Peter Knauer is an experienced artist based in Germany whose paintings have been exhibited nationally and in England. Through his distinctive geometric abstractions, he conveys traces of different times as well as aspects of the past and future expectations, playing into the present. In his artistic process, Knauer most often employs acrylics and collage on canvas.
