Revealed: The most-loved luxury designers around the world

Fashion plays an important part in our lives: the way we dress enables us to express ourselves, tell the world who we want to be, and how we feel on that particular day.

While fashion can sometimes be laughed off as “shallow”, it’s anything but. In fact, it’s played a huge role in key moments and milestones. Historical events have influenced fashion, in the same way that fashion has influenced society. Take Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ following WW2, enabling women to shun military-inspired clothing and opt for something more feminine instead, as well as Mary Quant making miniskirts mainstream in the 1960s.

The rise of fast fashion has gotten a lot of bad press, but one thing that’s stayed popular throughout the years is the power of luxury fashion houses. Not everyone can afford a designer wardrobe, but many of us can save up and purchase a bag, belt, or a bottle of perfume, as a way to buy into that brand.

But which brands are loved the most around the world? We’ve looked at the difference in search volumes to see the top brands across the USA and Europe. Has your favorite made the cut? It’s time to find out…

United States Map of most searched brands by state

Louis Vuitton and Dior are the USA’s favorite designer brands

Louis Vuitton was named as the number one luxury brand in every single US state, and it’s clear to see why. The LV logo is instantly recognizable, and helped it to become the most valuable fashion brand between 2006-2012. More recently, the brand was shrouded in tragedy when the then-men’s artistic director, the late Virgil Abloh, passed away in November 2021.

Because of Louis Vuitton’s dominance across the USA, we’ve broken down the data even further and found that Dior is hugely popular in several states, including Florida, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania. The French fashion house boasts the iconic Maria Grazia Chiuiri as its Creative Director, who’s previously done stints at Valentino and Fendi.

Dior and Louis Vuitton aside, Hermes, Gucci, Valentino, Burberry, and Alexander McQueen were also all named as the favorite luxury brands across several US states.

When we looked at search volumes to find the second most popular brand, Gucci was named by Nevada, with an increase of 88,700 searches. The new House of Gucci film has thrust the brand back into the limelight, and more specifically, the retelling of the scandalous murder of Maurizio Gucci, by his scorned ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani.

Originally founded in 1921, it seems strange that as a brand, Gucci struggled for many years until the Gucci family were ousted. In 2021, it was valued at $15,599, with its interlocking double G belts and range of perfumes being the perfect entry-level products. These items are ideal for fans who want to own a piece of the brand, but can’t afford the more upscale haute couture garments.

The only three American brands to make it on the list are Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Ralph Lauren; favored by Maine, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, and Wisconsin. All of them are fairly new brands – Ralph Lauren might be the oldest, but it was only founded in the 1960s, and Tom Ford launched his brand in 2005. The Ralph Lauren brand, in particular, plays up to a lifestyle that its die-hard fans want to live: the true American dream.

Europe Map of most searched brands by country

French over Italian fashion for Europe

Louis Vuitton dominates Europe, too, with 28 countries naming it as their favorite luxury brand. These include France, which had the biggest increases in searches (2,784,000) the UK (being close behind with 2,607,000 searches), Italy, Denmark and Spain.

Romania has claimed British brand, Alexander McQueen, as their favorite label, whereas Georgia was the only country to favor Chanel. This now-powerhouse has humble beginnings: Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel opened her first shop in 1910, exclusively selling hats, before opening her first boutique two years later. Fast-forward to 2022, and there are so many things that make this brand truly iconic – from turning the little black dress into a wardrobe staple for women all across the world, to the unforgettable scent of Chanel No.5. Not forgetting the cult classic 2.55 bag, instantly recognized by its buttery soft leather, luxurious gold chain, and quilted design.

Iceland picked Hugo Boss as their top brand, and Hermes was top in Germany, but it’s clear to see that French fashion houses are, for the most part, favored across Europe.

When we look at Europe’s second favorite brands, Dior and Louis Vuitton are still on top, but Prada was given a special mention by Montenegro, North Macedonia, and San Marino. Founded in 1913 in Milan – one of the most prestigious fashion capitals – Miuccia Prada moved the brand to the next level when she took the helm in 1978. All while simultaneously founding and running her other line, Miu Miu, along the way!

Other luxury brands to note include Jacquemus, which is the second top brand in Belarus. The Le Chiquito bag has been an instant hit on Instagram with every fashion influencer seeming to own one.

Balenciaga came in second place in Ireland, whereas Tom Ford is more sought after in Bulgaria and Moncler, in Finland. Looking at the third favorite brands, a few more names enter the mix, including British brand, Mulberry, which is most famous for its timeless bags, including the Bayswater, and the Alexa.

Bottega Veneta has made the cut in Denmark and Belarus, Valentino in Malta and possibly one of the most well-known Italian fashion houses: Versace, in Romania.

Of course, there are so many luxury labels out there and not all of them could be mentioned, but there are a few particularly notable absences, including Saint Laurent, Celine, Balmain and Givenchy.
