Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei, Romanization by Wade-Giles Ai Weiwei (born May 18, 1957 in Beijing, China) is a Chinese artist and activist who has created a wide range of artistic works including sculptures, architectural projects, photography and video. While Aisa’s art is highly regarded internationally, the often provocative and subversive aspects of his art – as well as his political directness – have prompted various forms of repression by the Chinese authorities

They were first sent to the northeastern Heilongjiang province and then to the northwestern Xinjiang autonomous region in 1976 before he was able to return to Beijing at the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1981 in an effort to escape the constraints of Chinese society. He grew up in the far northwest of China and lived in difficult conditions due to his father’s exile.

Ai Weiwei, a global citizen, artist and thinker, was arrested by the Chinese authorities in April 2011 and detained in solitary confinement for three months. After his release he was banned from traveling abroad, performing in public and being under constant government surveillance. After spending his formative years as an artist in New York in the 1980s, when Warhol was a god and dominated conceptual and performance art, he knows how to combine his life and art into a bold and politically charged performance that defines modern China as he will use any medium or any genre – sculpture, finished products, photography, performance art, architecture, Twitter and blog – to convey its poignant message.

Ai Weiwei studied at the Beijing Film Academy and the Parsons School of Design in New York ; poet Allen Ginsberg, with whom he befriended, said Ai that the galleries would not pay much attention to his work.

For me this is a refuge – not unlike the refugees in the camps, which gradually accumulate – since Ai fled China five years ago, and since 62-year-old artist and activist almost always works – and so a refugee here. I can leave by summer – but since 2015. I have lived here and never rested or gone out on weekends.

One of the differences Ay sees between the UK and Germany is her commitment to her work and opinions – he says he gave more interviews in a week than to the German media in five years –. The artist did a minimal amount of work during his decade in New York at a time when he “just wandered” 3 not showing a gallery and rarely exhibiting but returned to Beijing in 1993, where he has created conceptual and subversive works that vary widely from the widespread use of government surveillance cameras by voyeurs, the memory of children killed in the great Sichuan earthquake and various iterations of the artist.

This is not a fantasy, this is reality; so I made a small fence, a cage you can go in and out of that can take as little as 20 or 30 seconds it is a sculpture, an installation, a small modern instrument [showing] how people relate to others. In one well-known example, he placed a Chinese figure in a Johnnie doll house.

He initially also took a keen interest in the visual qualities of the work and went to study in New York at Parsons School of Design and Art Students League, unlike many conceptual artists.

Blenheim Palace’s majestic rural hideaway may be very different from the subjects Ay often turned his attention to but his relationship to the palace is deep: he became the first contemporary artist in Blenheim’s 300-year history to create the palace his canvas. Recently, The Gilded Cage, a massive interactive sculpture that explores the physical and ideological constraints of refugees, was installed on the grounds of the palace for long-term use.
