Artists often find it takes too long to understand their audience and to the detriment of their work Christo and Jeanne-Claude changed the way public art is created and understood. Christo, who used sculpture with his wife and partner Jeanne-Claude as a means of fundamentally changing people’s understanding of iconic structures and places, died at the age of 84.
Christo Vladimirov Yavachev (1935-2020) and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillon (1935-2009) were artists known for their large-scale environmental installations, often large landmarks and wrapped in cloth. Landscape design elements including the Reichstag, the Wrapped Bridge, the Wrapped Bridge, the California Running Fence and the New York City Central Park Gate. Christo and Jeanne-Claude first became famous after joining the Nouveaux Realistes, although they were never officially members of the group.
Together known as Christo and Jeanne-Claude they made breakthrough projects that spanned buildings, industrial sites and famous architectural buildings such as the Reichstag in Berlin or the creation of floating borders in pink fabric for the islands of Florida. Together they wrapped iconic landmarks such as the New Bridge in Paris in 1985 and the Reichstag in Berlin in 1995 and installed thousands of orange gates in Central Park, reminiscent of the sacred Tora Gate in Japan.
He leaves his son Cyril Christo, photographer, filmmaker and animal rights activist. Originally conceived by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in 1962, the project is due in September 2021 (project for Paris, Place de l’Etoile – Charles de Gaulle) as the artists confirm at the meeting… death notice. In the end the huge collage was sold by telephone for € 1,706,500, a record auction for the pair.
The gate was on display for 16 days and attracted over four million visitors. More than 170 trees in the gardens and surrounding fields were wrapped with approximately 53,000 square feet of polyester fabric and 12 miles of rope. Their Wrapped Walk Ways 1978 covered the trails of the Kansas City, Missouri Free Park with cloth.
Gates was in its infancy and development from 1970 to 1981 when City officials rejected him first. Michael Bloomberg, a close friend of artists, was elected mayor of New York in 2002, and his election paved the way for a possible green light for proposals in 2005.
In 1957 Christo attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts for a semester and then moved to Paris, where he met Jeanne-Claude in 1958; in his early years he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria, and started working with the Burian Theatre in Prague when the 1956 Hungarian revolution broke out; flew to Vienna, where he studied for a semester and then moved to Paris and began exhibiting his works in the Nouveau Realism style.
During his time as a portrait painter he met Jeanne-Claude de Guilbon, whom he married in 1959, who began sharing the same account with him across all of her projects in the mid-1990s, formalizing what the couple insists on, was always their practice.
The first sculptures of Christ were made from jars and bottles – some of which were found and others painted or wrapped in paper, plastic or cloth – Early collaborations between Christo and Jeanne-Claude include Dockside Packages (1961; Cologne ), Iron Curtain- Wall of Oil Drums (1962 – Paris ) and Corridor Storefront (1968 – New York ).
First of all, since they were and still are some of the cleanest artists in the world, they deleted all their work after a short exhibition period and returned the site to its original state. Fortunately, in the case of the Surrounded Islands, the facility was not rebuilt to its original condition, as 40 tons of waste was removed from the islands before the start of the project.
