5 Top Tips For First-Time Art Buyers 

Chicago-based painter Barbara Skiba-Poniatowski gives us her expert advice on investing in meaningful art

When Skiba-Poniatowski isn’t crafting vibrant paintings using acrylics and oils – heavily influenced by the Great Masters of European Art, and her Polish heritage – she is investing in art for herself (and her space.) So, as a Singulart artist, we thought we would reach out and ask her how she decides to make an investment, and what she would recommend to first-time art buyers. You may wish to start a collection with a particular style or theme in mind, you could be debating the price of a one-off purchase – whatever your motivation, here are some insider tips from our artist community that celebrate instinct and feelings.

Use your gut instinct

“I will typically be immediately drawn to the artwork. And if I keep coming back to it, there’s a very good chance it will end up in our home.”

Forget about matching

“If you love the art piece, don’t worry about whether it will match your sofa, or where you will place it. You’ll find a fabulous spot in your home or office.”

It’s all about feeling

“When selecting artwork, the most important factor for me is an immediate connection. I want a piece evoking feelings of whimsy, beauty, or nostalgia. Whether it’s a vibrant abstract painting that brightens my living space, or a serene landscape that transports me to another place, I want art that resonates with me.”

Ask: does it say something about me?

“Art has the power to transport me to another world. Overall, art adds color and depth to my everyday life, reminding me of the beauty that exists in the world and inspiring me to embrace my own creativity and imagination. It’s not just something I enjoy; it’s an essential part of who I am.” 

Don’t balk at the price

“Ask if you can make monthly payments.
