Theresa Poalucci has been creating art since retiring as a newspaper publisher, graphic artist, and writer. Having transitioned from traditional tools to digital art, she exhibits her work at four galleries in Tucson and is co-authoring a book on the business of selling art. In this article, you will discover Theresa Poalucci’s expert advice on starting or expanding your art collection.
What role does art play in your own life?
I believe in being surrounded by beautiful things, and anyone, regardless of their income can accomplish this. I hate a blank wall.
How do you decide which art to buy for yourself?
I don’t buy to invest, I buy because I really like a piece and I don’t buy what everyone else has. I buy when the piece fits me. Moreover, I mostly have my own art, but I have invested in local artists, and I like emerging artists. The pieces I have purchased have to speak to me, have to be colorful, and have to be fresh so that I won’t get tired of them
If you could give five tips to someone buying art, or building a collection for the first time, what would they be?
Buy what you like, not what you think is an investment. If you are just starting out, visit many local galleries, where you will find many talented artists that don’t necessarily have a national following. Also, look at young artists, who are trying to make a career of art. You never know where they are headed. I would also look at Art Guilds in your area and see what their artists are following. It is all about finding the right fit for you. Something that brings you joy or that you admire.
What is most important to you when selecting a piece of art?
Definitely style and subject matter. The artist’s background and their technique don’t matter to me, if I find the work impressive and if it feels fresh and fits my personal taste.
Talk us through some artistic trends in the art world you appreciate right now (or not)?
Digital art continues to be a major trend. AR and VR are expanding the art experience beyond traditional canvases. There is a new art museum in Las Vegas that I recently went to where all the exhibits were film. It was amazing. Not exactly for home use, but a real experience.
Conclusion
Theresa Poalucci offers valuable advice for anyone looking to start or expand their art collection. Her approach emphasizes buying art that you genuinely love rather than focusing on investment value. She recommends exploring local galleries to discover talented artists who may not have national recognition yet and encourages supporting emerging artists who are passionate about their craft. Art Guilds are another great resource she highlights, as they can connect collectors with pieces that resonate personally. Ultimately, Theresa Poalucci believes a collection should bring joy and be filled with works that feels fresh and inspiring, reflecting one’s unique taste and style.
