Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Joy Navon, and I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I’ve worn multiple hats as a creator, but I feel like I’ve finally landed in a role that feels the most me—creating home content while also being an interior decorator. I started creating content because I saw a lack of something that I wanted to see personally. It was one of those moments where you think, “If you don’t see it, be it.” I wanted to showcase what more you can do in a home to express your personality, while keeping everything well-designed and elevated.

How would you describe your design style?

I’d describe my style as modern eclectic. I love different design styles and can’t just choose one—so I mix things up. I adore modern design with clean lines, but I also love bold color choices and texture. Wood, rattan, satin, silk—anything that feels good to touch but also brings warmth to a space. I’m very intuitive in my choices, and a lot of my inspiration comes from cultural experiences and growing up in New York City. Being surrounded by different cultures has always been a huge influence on my style.

What inspires your creativity when decorating a space?

I always ask myself—and my clients—how we want to feel in the room. The mood can change depending on the space. For example, a game room should feel fun and energetic, while a bedroom should be peaceful and serene. Your choices in furniture, colors, and art can really shift the atmosphere of a space, so I think it’s important to be intentional about the emotions you want to evoke in each room.

How do you approach decorating a space that represents both you and your husband’s interests?

We’re lucky in that we have very similar styles, so it’s a fun fusion of both our interests. For example, my husband loves Legos, and I use them as part of our décor—it works out well! He’s also open-minded and loves colors and different styles as much as I do, so it feels very natural to blend our tastes. The key for us is making sure each space reflects both of us, not just in terms of design, but also how we want to feel in the room.

What role does art play in your home?

Art is everything to me. I always say art is life—you can’t separate the two. It’s a huge part of my home and my identity. I collect bold, memorable pieces that resonate with me, often with cultural references or by Black artists. My favorite piece is Basquiat’s Trumpet 1984. It’s the first artwork I bought, and it reminds me of my husband, who’s a trumpet player. Music and art are intertwined in our home—whether it’s through the art itself or my vinyl collection, music always plays a role in how I design and express myself.

What advice do you have for new art collectors?

Go for what excites you. When you’re shopping for art, pick pieces that you can’t stop thinking about, the ones that make your jaw drop. Don’t just choose something because it’s trendy or because you’ve seen it in other people’s homes. Choose pieces that resonate with you on a personal level and reflect who you are. It’s about creating a connection to the art, not just matching it to your décor.
