I ❤️ Dakar with Kh Bamba: A Link In Every Thread

When we first encountered Kh Bamba’s work, we were struck not just by the textures he weaves into his canvases, but by the profound emotional current running through them. His art feels alive: a living conversation between tradition, identity, and the shared human experience. It invites you to come closer — to lose yourself in the layers of thread, color, and meaning, and to find something familiar yet deeply personal within.

It’s no surprise, then, that Kh Bamba was named Artist of the Year for The Singulart Prize 2025. This year’s theme, “Deeply Human,” called on artists to explore the emotions, stories, and connections that define us — and Bamba’s work answered with breathtaking honesty. His winning piece, “Le Mariage” captures one of life’s most powerful moments: the coming together of two people in love, witnessed and celebrated by their communities. “Le Mariage is a moment of profound humanity,” he told us. “A celebration of love, union, and commitment. I wanted to capture the energy and beauty of that shared experience — a connection that speaks to us all, no matter where we come from.”

Born and based in Dakar, Senegal, Kh Bamba’s creative language blends multiple traditions. His process is deeply tactile — embroidery, textiles, acrylics, and painting techniques combine to create intricate abstract compositions. “In textile, in thread, in color, I find the rhythm of life,” he shared during our recent conversation with Singulart. “Every stitch, every brushstroke, carries a memory, a feeling, a heartbeat.” His art reflects a dialogue of Senegalese craftsmanship.

Wanting to understand the environment that shapes Bamba’s work, we recently asked filmmaker @dannywonders to visit him in Dakar. Through Danny’s lens, we discovered the vibrant streets, bustling markets, and colorful, sun-drenched textures of Bamba’s hometown — all of which feed into his creative spirit. In candid moments captured on film, Bamba opened up about what drives him to create, why he entered The Singulart Prize 2025, and what he hopes people feel when they encounter his work. “Art, for me, is a way to connect with others without needing translation,” he said. “It’s pure emotion.”

Walking through Dakar with Bamba is a sensory experience: the hum of conversation, the woven patterns of traditional textiles, the bold murals splashed across city walls. It’s easy to see how these sights and sounds become threads in his own artistic tapestry. Yet his vision extends beyond place — his work taps into universal emotions that transcend borders. Whether it’s love, belonging, celebration, or loss, his textured canvases speak a language we all understand.

The Singulart Prize, now in its sixth year, continues to champion artists who not only demonstrate technical excellence, but who also offer fresh perspectives on what it means to be human today. With a record number of submissions this year from over 100 countries, the competition was fierce — but Bamba’s work stood out for its raw honesty and cross-cultural resonance. As Vera Kempf, Singulart’s co-founder, put it, “Kh Bamba embodies the spirit of Deeply Human — he reminds us that no matter where we are from, certain emotions are universal.”

You can explore Kh Bamba’s portfolio on Singulart, where his pieces continue to captivate collectors around the world, or follow his journey behind the scenes on Instagram. And don’t miss the short film captured by @dannywonders, offering an intimate look into Bamba’s creative world — a world where every stitch tells a story.

At its heart, Kh Bamba’s art reminds us that even in a fast-moving, fractured world, there are still threads that bind us together — love, memory, tradition, hope. Sometimes, it takes the hand of an artist to show us that the simplest gestures — a line of thread, a patch of color — can hold the deepest meaning.
