Art Fit for a Sheikh: Adventures in Scale with Robert Süess

Art Fit for a Sheikh: Adventures in Scale with Robert Süess

Robert Süess is a Swiss artist whose vibrant, expressive works reflect decades of experimentation, dedication, and a deeply intuitive approach to color and form. Born in Lucerne in 1950, Robert studied typography and visual arts in Lucerne and Zurich before immersing himself in painting at various art academies across Europe. Since 2006, he has also built an international reputation as a sought-after painting instructor, teaching experimental techniques at top academies throughout the German-speaking world.

Robert’s art is rooted in a rich tradition of abstract expressionism and figurative composition, blending bold color palettes with dynamic structures and a love for type and texture. His canvases—whether large or small—are emotional landscapes, shaped by his observations, travels, and reflections. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, he often embarks on creative journeys through Italy, Spain, Egypt, Greece, Japan, Lapland, and Alaska, bringing new life and influence into his practice.

My works are stories made visible. They are energy-laden compositions reflecting my passion for color, form, and rhythm.

Since joining Singulart in December 2018, Robert’s presence in the international art scene has only grown. Within a year, his work began attracting a wider audience, and his collaboration with Artist Liaison Annika Nein helped elevate both his visibility and his sales. In 2021, Singulart invited him to an exclusive partnership. That year, he was also recognized among the top 5% most-viewed artists on the platform.

With my creativity, vision, technique, and originality, I create works that tell stories, evoke emotions, and offer a window into my view of the world.

One standout moment in his Singulart journey came when a sheikh from Saudi Arabia purchased two of Robert’s large-format works—measuring 120×200 cm and 100×150 cm. The pieces were first transported to Barcelona, stored temporarily, and then delivered to Jeddah after the client’s new residence was complete. Another unforgettable experience involved a special commission from a company in Valencia for a 200×200 cm piece. The logistics of shipping such a large artwork presented a unique challenge, requiring a custom-built crate from Paris that didn’t fit through the studio door. The canvas had to be removed from its frame and reassembled in a different room—a memorable task with a happy ending.

The client was very happy with the result!

Beyond his own studio, Robert draws inspiration from greats like Antoni Tàpies, whose museum in Barcelona he has visited many times. While he hasn’t yet acquired an original, he proudly owns several of Tàpies’ lithographs and collects small works by major artists that adorn his workspace.

Tàpies is one of my great role models. His work has had a deep and lasting influence on me.

As Robert looks to the future, he is especially interested in expanding his reach in Asia and the Arab world. He has already been featured by Singulart at the Affordable Art Fair in London and exhibited at the Singulart gallery in Stuttgart. Looking ahead, he hopes to collaborate more on corporate and business art piece commissions.

Whether creating, teaching, or curating, Robert Süess continues to bring bold vision and artistic precision to everything he does—a life lived in color, with work that speaks in every language.

We are so thrilled to have Robert as part of our Singulart Artist community these last 7 years – we look forward to the next 7 years.
