« I am fascinated by the changes and distortions happening through remembering, and even though we tend to believe we remember exactly what happened, we don’t. »

Born in 1976, Melinda Matyas is a Hungarian painter who currently resides in London. Her unique portraits are characterised by their use of fragmentation and vivid colour, and explore ideas of identity and memory.

Identity and memory

Matyas has always been passionate about art, studying a BA in Painting as well as Byzantine mural painting. She takes inspiration from both the Old Masters and contemporary painters such as Egon Schiele and Jenny Saville for her portraits. Her work explores identities and cultural differences through memory, as this is what shapes us. Matyas is interested in the idea that memories are altered by the act of recollection.

Fragmentation

Matyas reflects the distortion of memory through her artistic process. She begins with images from life drawings or photographs and plans a formal composition, working principally with oils to build up layers. Halfway through, Matyas abandons her formal plan and her reference imagery, using intuition to fragment forms and alter colours. She creates dynamism through colour to emphasize the transient  nature of time.

International success

Matyas has exhibited widely in the UK and overseas, in countries such as Romania, Portugal and the USA. She has exhibited in the International Biennial of Drawing in Pilsen, the Czech Republic, where her art was named as one of the Biennial’s Best Works. In 2018 Matyas participated in the Other Art Fair in London.
