저, J. 피츠패트릭이 정식 교육을 받은 독학 화가라고 말하는 것은 핵심을 놓치는 것입니다. 물론 정식 교육을 받은 것은 맞습니다. 저는 본래 독학을 즐기는 사람이지만, 제게 그림은 능동적으로 시작하는 행위라기보다는 경험적인 행위입니다. 그림을 그리는 것은 의도적으로 아무것도 하지 않고, 아무것도 생각하지 않는 것입니다. 조용히 앉아서 무언가가 제 내면 외부에서 찾아오기를 기다리는 것입니다. 그 이미지는 바로 나타날 수도 있고, 며칠이 걸릴 수도 있습니다. 그러다 갑자기, 바로 직전까지는 없었던 이미지가 나타나고, 저는 그 이미지에 몸을 맡깁니다.
