Pop Art is a figurative painting movement born in Great Britain in the 1950s, and which became hugely popular during the 1960s in the United States. It is inspired by popular culture, daily life, advertising and comics. It involves humor or what is often considered bad taste. The term Pop Art was coined by the British artist Richard Hamilton in 1957: he imagined a movement in which artworks could be multiplied and reproduced, daring, sexy and full of spirit. The use of bright and saturated color is also characteristic of Pop Art painting. English Pop Art and American Pop Art are very close and yet have some notable differences. On the British side, the movement tends to be more engaged and accusatory towards consumerist culture. On the American side, the Pop Art movement was lighter and aimed more at representing the emotions and symbols of popular culture. To this day, we are aware of iconic names in Pop Art like Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol.
Even today, SINGULART’s artists, inspired by these colorful and joyful paintings, produce works in the iconic Pop Art style. The French artist Benjamin Perrin is inspired by the screen prints of Andy Warhol, in his Pop Art paintings that combine historical figures and popular media culture references. Niki Hare takes a much more graphic approach, creating Pop Art works that incorporate textual elements or numbers. Discover the richness and diversity of contemporary Pop Art paintings on SINGULART.
