In the 20th century, contemporary artists embraced sand both as a subject and a revolutionary material. Post-1950, Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollock famously incorporated it into his "drip" paintings, such as Number 1, 1950 (Lavender Mist), using it to create texture and depth. Another key figure is Robert Rauschenberg, who integrated sand-covered cardboard into his Early Egyptian series to blur the line between painting and sculpture.
