Conceptual Visions: Money or Gold? - curated by Juliana Angulo

A curation by Juliana Angulo, Art Historian, Curator, and Advisor at FAREX & Singulart - Contemporary artists have been inspired by wealth and luxury for decades. Some have gone as far as employing real currency as a medium for their works. From Andy Warhol’s dollar-bill series, to Damien Hirst’s diamond skull, and Cattelan’s fully functioning gold toilet sculpture, precious materials have become artistic metaphors for our society. This collection explores topics such as money, power, and even war: a credit card presenting a peace message, a humorous representation of a dollar bill, gold-colored abstractions, and a bitcoin sculpture, are among the pieces that explore these notions. The works are stylistically and technically diverse, and do not all explicitly reference wealth. However, their combined presence and aesthetics guide us towards this idea. They also share a conceptual tone where the message becomes as important as their appearance. Some feel like a critique towards the market or economy, while others employ humor and irony to challenge our perception. Many purely celebrate beauty, sparkle, and glow. Between admiration and temptation, this series invites us to reflect on what holds real value in life: meaning or status? glamour or depth? money or gold?
