Crowned heads - We are all Queens and Kings - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of the crown is a powerful source of artistic inspiration, encapsulating centuries of human obsession with power, authority, divine right, and personal identity. Symbolically, the crown represents sovereignty, eternal life, victory, and the spiritual link between the earthly and the celestial. Psychologically, it often speaks to personal aspiration, ambition, and the burden of responsibility. In art history, particularly from 1950 onward, artists have often subverted or repurposed the crown's traditional grandeur. Andy Warhol made the image iconic with his "Crown" series (1982), which rendered the ultimate symbol of royalty in his signature Pop Art style, democratizing the image and questioning its value. Jean-Michel Basquiat frequently used a rough, almost childish three-pointed crown motif in his paintings to signify self-anointment and elevate his subjects (often Black historical figures) to royalty or sainthood. In photography, a world-famous artist whose work is relevant is Herb Ritts. While known for fashion and celebrity portraiture, his striking photograph Madonna with Crown of Thorns (1987) uses the crown as a symbol of suffering, sacrifice, and complex, modern-day martyrdom, aligning power with vulnerability.
