Psychologically, the mirror is the ultimate tool for introspection, representing the boundary between the inner self and the external world. Historically, artists have used mirrors for centuries, notably in works like Velázquez's Las Meninas. Post-1950, the mirror became an active material and conceptual subject. Minimalist artist Robert Morris utilized mirrored cubes, challenging the viewer's sense of space and presence by making them part of the artwork, such as in his Mirror Cubes series (1965). The Italian Arte Povera artist Michelangelo Pistoletto created his celebrated Quadri mirroring (Mirror Paintings) from 1962 onward, placing photographic images onto highly polished stainless steel to merge art with reality and the moving moment. World-famous photographer Cindy Sherman has used mirrors and reflections extensively in her staged portraits to explore female identity and the construction of the self, particularly in her series Untitled Film Stills (1977–1980). This collection examines the mirror's dual capacity to reveal and to deceive, acting as both a psychological portal and a dynamic object.
