A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of The Carpet—including Turkish, Afghan, and Persian varieties—is a deeply layered artistic subject, symbolizing comfort, status, trade, cultural memory, and the intersection of utility and beauty. Psychologically, it defines intimate space and is often associated with the exotic or the mythical, such as the magic carpet.
In Art History, carpets have long been depicted in paintings to signify wealth or trade, but after 1950, they became the medium itself. Italian Conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti famously collaborated with Afghan artisans on his embroidered maps and word squares, like Mappa (started 1971), turning the carpet into a canvas for geopolitical and linguistic exploration. Post-Minimalist artist Robert Morris utilized scraps of felt and industrial carpeting in his installations to challenge notions of preciousness. Artist Mona Hatoum (b. 1952), whose work spans sculpture and installation, used the medium for unsettling effect in pieces like Doormat II (1998), crafted from stainless steel pins. This transformation of a familiar, soft object into something hard and hostile critiques domesticity and cultural barriers. This collection celebrates the carpet as an object that is simultaneously functional, decorative, and a rich source of inspiration.
