Graceful as a ballerina - curated by Flavio Scaloni

A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - The theme of the Ballerina and classical ballet is a perennial artistic subject, symbolizing discipline, grace, ethereal beauty, and the pursuit of perfection. Psychologically, the dancer embodies the tension between physical effort and effortless appearance, representing aspiration and the fleeting nature of performance. In Art History, the theme is famously associated with Edgar Degas (1834–1917), who captured the daily life of dancers, notably in his sculpture Little Dancer Aged Fourteen (c. 1880). Post-1950, artists continued this focus. Pop artist Andy Warhol explored the iconography of the professional dancer in his vibrant silkscreen portraits. Abstract Expressionist painter Willem de Kooning often integrated the figure of the dancer into his dynamic, energetic canvases, capturing movement and form through powerful brushstrokes, particularly in the period following his iconic Women series. World-famous photographer Annie Leibovitz has created numerous striking, dramatic portraits of celebrated dancers for various publications, notably her work with the legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov in the 1980s, often focusing on their form, strength, and celebrity status. This collection explores the ballerina motif as a synthesis of athletic rigor and staged narrative.
